Exploring the Ichthyofaunal Diversity of Ranisagar Pond: A Case Study from Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh, India

Author(s): Manish Kumar and Neetu Shrivastava

Abstract: Ranisagar Pond in Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh, India, is a special place known for its importance to nature and culture. This study looked at the pond's fish and water life to help protect them. Over a year, we checked the fish every month using different nets and traps to see what kinds of fish live there. We found 1308 fish from 7 families. The most common were the Cyprinidae family, with fish like Rohu, Catla, and Mrigal, and the Siluridae family, with catfish like Wallago attu and Clarias batrachus. We also found other interesting fish, like the air-breathing Climbing Perch and the Giant Snakehead. This study shows how important it is to watch over Ranisagar Pond and protect its special fish and environment from things like pollution and too much fishing. We need to make sure the water stays clean and safe for the fish to live in. We also need to study more about the fish in Ranisagar Pond to understand them better and protect them for the future.
