Abstract: The study was carried out to determine the effects of sex on length-weight relationship and condition factor of Clarias gariepinus in Zuru Dam, Kebbi State, Nigeria. A total of 200 fishes were used in the research of 300g average weight, at the period of June/July and both length and weight were measured. The specimens were procured from the fisher folks at the landing site different varieties of fishing Gears were used such as hook and line, long line, clap nets and traps to harvest the fish. The measurement of fish length and weight were taken at the landing site. Total length (from the snout to the end of the caudal fin) and standard length (from the snout to the end of the caudal peduncle) were determined using tape line to the nearest centimeter. The fish weight was measured with a table top weighing balance to the nearest gram. Length-weight relationship and condition factor were analyzed and computed in the laboratory guided by relevant procedures. The parameters “a” and “b” of the length-weight relationship were estimated using the formula W= aLb while the condition factor was calculated from the equation K = W100/ L3. The “b” values in the relationship were; males (2.5), females (4.8) where male exhibiting isometric growth while female exhibiting positive allometric growth hence obeying the cube law. The mean condition factor (K) of the specimen produced male and female sex values of 0.99 and 0.08 respectively, an indication of the healthy status of the population with less tissue energy reserved, depressed reproductive potential and low survival. The present study provides a framework for future and more research should carry out in the rainy season to evaluate the effects of seasonal species of the same parameters.
