Assessment of morphological, toxicological and ethological effects of Aldrin exposure on freshwater teleost fishes
Author(s): Manoj Kumar
Abstract: Aldrin is an organochlorine pesticide that stays in the environment and builds up in aquatic animals. In this study, freshwater fish (
Labeo rohita and
Channa gachua) were exposed to different amounts of Aldrin for a certain period. The research looked at changes in the fishes’ body and organ health. The fish showed visible problems like skin damage, fin erosion, scale loss, and unusual behavior. Inside their bodies, the liver and gills were also damaged by the toxin. These results show that Aldrin harms fish and raise concerns about using such dangerous chemicals in the environment. Aldrin is a white crystalline powder that is insoluble in water but dissolves well in organic solvents (benzene & ether). Aldrin is insecticides products that kill insects. Aldrin stimulates the central nervous system (CNS) and is toxic to warm-blooded animals as well as aquatic animals such as fishes
(Labeo rohita and
Channa gachua). Aldrin was first prepared in the late 1940s and is manufactured by the reaction of hexachlorocyclopentadiene with bicycloheptadiene (both derived from hydrocarbons obtained from petroleum hydrocarbon). The molecular weight of aldrin is 364.91 g/mol. Poisoning of aldrin can result from ingestion, inhalation, or absorption through the skin, mouth and gills. Aldrin is not found naturally in the environment. It is highly flammable when exposed to temperatures ? 200°C. Aldrin is a widely used insecticide that has value since it may work as a contact poison, stomach poison, unbalance body, body pain irritation function and has some fumigant properties. It can also be converted to Dieldrin by epoxidation in soil, which makes it an important insecticide.
