Assessment of Physico-chemical parameters of Mountain River Baldi, Garhwal Himalayas
Author(s): Neetu Singh, Ramesh C Sharma
Abstract: Physico-chemical parameters of River Baldi was studied for one annual cycle (November 2011-October 2012) at reference site and impacted site. All the physico-chemical parameters were analysed by standard methods. The range of some important parameters were Dissolved oxygen (6.04 -10.32 mg L
-1), Turbidity (2-115 NTU), Total Dissolved Solids (30-276 mg L
-1), Alkalinity (40-84.6 mg L
-1), pH (7.58-7.88), Hardness (124-198 mg L
-1), Nitrate (0.058-0.115 mg L
-1) and Phosphate (0.015-0.080 mg L
-1) recorded. ANOVA between seasons were computed and was found significant (
p<0.05). Pearson’s correlation coefficient between parameters for seasons was analysed. Conductivity, turbidity, TDS and pH were significantly correlated with each other. On comparison between sites, the water quality was good at reference site as compared to impacted site. Anthropogenic disturbances degrade the water quality at impacted site. The study concludes that water at both sites of Baldi River is suitable for drinking purpose and other human use.
