Abstract: Marine algae act as the vital source of marine ecosystem. To assess the antioxidant properties of marine algae
Valoniopsis pachynema and
Sargassum swartzii. Direct extraction method was used to prepare the algal extracts. Antioxidant activities has been evaluated using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl DPPH Radical Scavenging Assay, Hydrogen peroxide (H
2O
2) scavenging assay, Total phenolic content, β-carotene bleaching assay, Nitric oxide radical scavenging assay. High antioxidant activity was exhibited using
Sargassum swartzii extracts.
In Total phenolic content marine algae
Valoniopsis pachynema showed high antioxidant activity. Comparative analysis results showed that both the algae could be used as antioxidant agents. The marine algae
Valoniopsis pachynema and
Sargassum swartzii methanol extracts exhibited effective antioxidant activities. Hence they could be used as antioxidants.
