Environmental and ecological assessment of Ostracods inhabiting in Bandırma Bay, the Marmara Sea, Turkey

Author(s): Ferda Perçin-Paçal, Hüsamettin Balkis

Abstract: The present study focuses mainly on the ecology of benthic ostracods in the sediments collected from the Bandırma Bay and effects of the environmental parameters on the ostracod diversity and individual abundance. Sediment and water samples were collected seasonally from 8 stations in different depths (0.3, 1, 5, 10, 20, 30 m). Environmental parameters (temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, total organic carbon, and total calcium carbonate) were related to species diversity and individual abundance of 75 identified ostracod species. Carinocythereis carinata, Cytheridea neapolitana and Loxoconcha rhomboidea species showed a wide distribution in different ecological environments in the research area. Positive correlation was observed between species and individual numbers of ostracoda with all measured ecological parameters except temperature and dissolved oxygen.
