Marine capture fisheries: Sustainability issues

Abstract: Marine capture fisheries play a critical role in sustaining and nourishing human society. It is an important source of food, economy and well-being of coastal population since time immemorial. But in recent years, human activities are threatening the health of the ocean and putting enormous pressure on marine ecosystems. Overfishing, pollution, indiscriminate fishing practices and climate change are together causing, irreversible changes in the ocean that could threaten its environmental health and economic vitality. Hence, there is urgent need of strengthening sustainable practices and policies in fisheries around the globe to drive marine capture fisheries towards sustainability.
